Nintendo Switch Sports Resort: All 12 Sports and How the Motion Controls Work

Nintendo Switch Sports Resort launched for Nintendo Switch 2 on October 22, 2026, bringing 12 motion-controlled activities to an island setting. If you are deciding what to play first, the useful distinction is not simply new versus returning sports: some activities reward controlled gestures, some test timing, and others use the Joy-Con 2 in less familiar ways.

This guide is based on Nintendo’s published descriptions rather than independent hands-on testing. It explains the listed controls and formats without promising undocumented techniques or competitive advantages.

All 12 sports at a glance

Nintendo identifies two new activities, Thumb Wrestling and Skateboarding, alongside ten returning sports: Power Cruising, Archery, Bowling, Table Tennis, Boxing, Prop Plane, Tennis, Volleyball, Basketball and Golf.

New activities: Thumb Wrestling and Skateboarding

Thumb Wrestling

The stated goal is to pin an opponent’s thumb for three seconds. Nintendo notes that holding your thumb down makes it stronger and larger. That creates a simple decision between applying pressure and timing a pin, rather than relying on complex button combinations.

Skateboarding

Skateboarding is an especially interesting demonstration of Joy-Con 2 hardware because Nintendo describes using a controller like a mouse to grind rails, slide and perform aerial tricks. It may be worth trying after simpler activities if you are unfamiliar with the controller’s mouse-style input.

Returning sports: what each asks you to do

Precision and timing

Archery asks you to aim and release while accounting for possible wind effects. Bowling supports adding spin by twisting the controller. In Golf, players adjust their shots and consider trajectory before swinging. These activities are good starting points for learning how small movements can affect results.

Head-to-head action

Table Tennis focuses on serving and returning shots. Tennis turns a Joy-Con into a racket, while Boxing emphasizes punches and knockouts. Volleyball involves bumps, sets and spikes, so player positioning and sequencing matter alongside timing. Basketball includes dribbling, passing and shooting.

Exploration and movement

Power Cruising uses a pair of Joy-Con controllers to steer, with a twisting gesture for a boost. Prop Plane uses tilting to control flight and lets players fire at balloons. These activities offer a different feel from the more direct racket and ball sports.

Can you play solo or with friends?

Nintendo lists support for one to four players on a single system and two to sixteen online, depending on activity and configuration. Online features may require Nintendo Switch Online; additional controllers and other equipment may be needed for multiplayer. The game supports TV and tabletop modes. Check the specific in-game sport’s options before promising a particular local or online match size.

What should beginners try first?

As an editorial suggestion, begin with Bowling or Tennis to understand motion inputs, move to Archery or Golf for finer control, and then try Skateboarding and Prop Plane to experience different controller interactions. This is a learning sequence, not a ranking of difficulty based on testing.

What to check before buying

Nintendo lists the game as a Switch 2 exclusive with a file size of approximately 10.3 GB. Make sure you have compatible Joy-Con 2 controllers and enough space for the intended multiplayer setup. If you mainly want online competition, check subscription and regional availability requirements first.
